About Darrel Whitten

Darrel Whitten, editor and publisher of The Japan Investor, has lived and worked in Japan for the past 31 years. A native of California, he began his Japan career as an investment analyst for Nomura Securities at their Nihonbashi Headquarters. He has been director and managing director of Japanese investment research for three major investment banks-Prudential Securities, Lehman Brothers and ABN AMRO Securities. Darrel has been providing investors with value-added research on Japanese financial markets for over 20 years. With the advent of the World Wide Web, he founded the award-winning Asian Business Watch in 1993 when there was a dearth of internet sites that covered Japan and Asian financial markets.
Given his long experience in the Japanese capital markets, Whitten brings a unique, hands-on perspective. His market insights provide a thorough analysis of current market trends from a historical context-a context that often gets forgotten with each new crop of eager investment "professionals" and each new investment fad or "bubble". His contacts with both the buy-side and sell-side analysts and fund managers-within and without Japan-keep him current on what's hot and what's not on the "Street". His experience balances this with historical perspective and common sense.
Darrel is also founder and managing director of Investor Networks Inc. Investor Networks is a Tokyo-based independent IR consultancy that provides IR consulting services to listed Japanese companies. He is also an advisor to The Gerson Lehrman Group's Council of Advisors for the Legal, Economic & Regulatory Affairs Advisory Board.
